Another year is almost over! Here’s a look back at some of the blog highlights and the most popular posts of 2024.

Kawaii Reviews

We got to review a lot of subscription boxes, this year and I hope they were helpful if you considered subscribing to one. I think this was the best year ever for Pusheen Box – all the themes were super cute and there was a noticeable change to include less items but of a higher quality and uniqueness, including exclusive plushies. We also teamed up with TokyoTreat & Sakuraco for the whole year and have enjoyed so many fun and interesting Japanese snacks – and we made some really cool videos of them each month for Instagram. They sent us a cute Ghibli-themed YumeTwins kawaii box too. Other popular reviews included the Rolife DIY Christmas Melody Tree , Pipsticks Sticker Club, Letter Sets From Dreaming of Tokyo and the new Animal Crossing Pocket Camp Complete game.

Travel & Events

It wasn’t the best year for local events and we only managed a visit to the pop-up Hello Kitty Cafe At Primark. However, Emma made the most of her time in Japan with lots of kawaii posts and guides including Ghibli Park & The Ghibli Museum, The Pokemon Cafe In Osaka, Super Nintendo World and teamLab Borderless, plus some Kawaii Character Cafes & Bakeries and a trip on the Hello Kitty Shinkansen. You’ll be happy to hear she’ll be returning in 2025.

Kawaii Artists

Discovering and promoting small artists and makers is always our biggest priority and we shared lots through our Kawaii Shop of the Week feature, as well as some fun finds in Art & Handmade and Etsy Picks. It’s never been more important to support your favourites as things just keep getting harder for small shops. This year brought a huge rise in AI and dropshippers flooding the market, Etsy suspending original artists’ shops when their products were copied by Temu, MCM Comic Con pricing long-time exhibitors out of their events, and, just last week, new EU regulations that make shipping internationally even more difficult and expensive. If you’re a small kawaii shop struggling to get seen, do fill out our submission form for next year’s posts.

Crafts, Guides & DIYs

Crafts are always popular so we made sure to share lots of cute and seasonal crafts, DIYs, recipes and activities for you to try. Our own crafting sadly took a bit of a backseat this year (this was a horrible year for me personally) and all we managed was a DIY Miniature House Kit. We did share a lot of original guides including Setting Up A Kawaii Gaming Journal, Kawaii Plush Display Ideas, Cute & Easy Ways To Display Art and Shopping For Kawaii On Vinted. I also spent some time creating new shopping guides including Where To Buy Studio Ghibli Merch and The Best Shops For Cute Craft Supplies Worldwide. The site also got some upgrades with a new look and some new categories, including The Best of Super Cute Kawaii and Character Collabs, plus a page to browse DIYs by season or holiday and the return of our popular quiz, Which Kawaii Character Are You?

Cute Characters

Our favourite kawaii characters also got plenty of features for all their adorable and fun products and collabs. Hello Kitty was definitely the star of 2024 as she celebrated her 50th anniversary with a stream of events and collabs throughout the year. New characters included Sugarcocomuu the cotton candy rabbit, Ishiyowa-chan the unmotivated dog (both San-X) and Hanamaruobake the shy mysterious ghost (Sanrio). The ARTBOX Cafe in Brighton UK kept their Hello Kitty & Friends theme running for another year with seasonal dishes and a new permanent Gudetama Cafe opened in California, US. There were also many many new pop-up character cafes & events in Japan, which we shared in our newsletter link roundups.

Thanks for all your support! We’d love to hear about which posts you enjoyed most this year or anything you would like to see on the blog next year. I’ve noticed a lack of feedback and comments everywhere lately – do tell your favourite artists, makers, shops, bloggers, vloggers etc. when they share something you enjoy as I guarantee almost all of them are regularly thinking about giving it all up and a nice comment really does make all the difference. People are very quick to tell us when we make a mistake, but not when we do something well.
