It’s no secret that I love to buy kawaii plushies and I like to be able to see my favourites and enjoy them every day. If you need some inspiration, here are my top tips for displaying different kinds of plush around your home or space.
Mini Plush
Most of my collection is mini plush and I created a whole area for them in a built-in bookshelf using acrylic shelves at different heights with space for larger plush around the sides. You can read more about this in my previous post about Organising My Kawaii Plush Display which has some suggestions for different types of shelves.
If you only have a few, or less space, look out for house-shaped shelves and houses and play sets for toys where you can arrange your plush. I love my display house which is still available in 4 designs/colours at the San-X Shop (JP – requires forwarding service). It’s perfectly sized for the Sumikko Gurashi tenori plush but can fit other small plush as well. They also have some really fun plush playsets including rooms, sofas and beds.
Keychain Plush
You can usually remove the keyring parts from keychain plush but why not take advantage of it? I started hanging my favourite Pusheen surprise plush on my SKÅDIS pegboard from IKEA (global) and now they’ve taken over and I love seeing them all together. The pegboard comes in a few different sizes and there’s lots of different hooks to choose from. I don’t see the long bar I have (the tape has since been replaced with MORE PUSHEENS) but you might find it in store or with a different pegboard brand.
Small Plush & Sitting Plush
Bookshelves are the perfect place to display small individual plush like sitting plush, standing plush, poseable plush or those with a bean bag filling. Sitting plush are especially cute if they have little legs to swing over the front. My Corocorocoronya plush (top left) is poseable with a removable bag so it’s nice to have the reminder to change him up sometimes. These can also work well for your desk or office space as they can sit on top of things like computer monitors and filing cabinets to keep you company. I also make seasonal displays with themed plush for holidays like Christmas and Halloween.
Medium Plush
I always found these the hardest to display but they can fit nicely above books/DVDs etc. on shelving that has a lot of space above, or along a shelf, wardrobe or windowsill.
I recently moved all my Meowchi plush to the top of the sofa bed in my studio/spare room and it adds some extra fun to the room. I don’t have visitors that often but it’s no bother to throw everything into a plastic crate when I need to turn it into a bed.
Useful Plush
If your plush hoarding is starting to get out of hand, consider buying accessories and home decor that just happen to also be plushies! Pillows are really just plush that are more flat or long so you can lounge on them, but be warned that visitors will do just that and they may get squashed after a while. I also have plush bags that I hang on a long mirror and a plush Jinbe San tissue box cover.
Large Plush
There’s no realistic way to disguise large plushies as decor so just embrace the human need for cute and huggable things and put them anywhere you like! I have my Alpacasso and Champs Coo displayed on top of a shelving unit and my big Rilakkuma sits on the armchair in my living room to keep me company since I live alone. Is talking to a plush worse than talking to yourself? Don’t answer that.
Also a little reminder that life is short and you should decorate your home/space however you want. I know my home gets some raised eyebrows when I have tradesmen in etc. but I really don’t care what they think. Being surrounded by colourful smiling huggable things makes me happy and that’s all that matters.
Where to buy kawaii plush
I’ve been collecting for a long time so many of my plush in these photos are no longer available but leave a comment if you want to ask about any characters or brands you don’t recognise. You can also check the Plush & Toys section or our guide to The Best Kawaii Shops Worldwide for ideas on where to buy different kinds of plushies. How do you display yours?
