Another year is almost over! Sadly we weren’t able to do staff favourites this year but here’s a look back at some of the blog highlights and the most popular posts of 2023.
2023 had its ups and downs. The main highlight has to be reaching our 15th anniversary and we also added Allison to the team, who I’m sure you’ll agree has fitted in perfectly. Huge thanks to everyone who applied to our new writer search and especially those who wrote guest posts. Less happily, I had to deal with a ton of frustrating tech issues when our web hosting company merged that still aren’t fully resolved. We still managed to write about a lot of cute stuff!
Kawaii Reviews
We were able to try out some really cool stuff this year, including a lot of subscription boxes, thanks to Pusheen Box, TokyoTreat, Sakuraco and Japan Crate. We reviewed quite a few cute and creative books too and branched out into some new things like Lukey Lukey makeup, plus I got an adorable box full of Meowchis from Tasty Peach Studios.
Events & Travel
It was a pretty good year for UK events with Emma managing to attend MCM Comic Con twice, along with Star Wars Celebration and London Japan Matsuri. Allison visited Super Nintendo World while Arlandyia got to try out the cute food at the Miffy at Gram Cafe & Pancakes collab. Gabriel also wrote some helpful kawaii city guides with cute places to shop and eat in Manchester and Leeds.
Kawaii Artists
Discovering and promoting small artists and makers is always our biggest priority and we shared lots through our Kawaii Shop of the Week feature, as well as some fun finds and favourites in Art & Handmade and Etsy Picks. There was only one Meet the Artist interview but it was a good one, catching up with Riss of Tasty Peach Studios. I already have a few people on my interview wish list for 2024.
Crafts & DIYs
We didn’t have as much time as usual for Original DIYs but I did create tutorials for two cards – a Snow Bunny New Year Card and a Cute Cross Stitch Card. We made some fun things as part of our SCK Tries… series too with everything from cress gardens and Pokemon-themed ice cream mochi to a needlepoint vending machine and some disastrous window stickers, not to mention the DIY projects advent calendar I’ll finally be finishing off this weekend!
Cute Characters
Our favourite kawaii characters also got plenty of features, thanks to all their adorable new products, themes, collaborations and food. Rilakkuma celebrated his 20th anniversary, while Pokantotan made their debut on SCK. The Cute Characters series continued too with a look at Kawaii Birds and Kawaii Couples.
