TokyoTreat & Sakuraco Snack Box Highlights

by

TokyoTreat & Sakuraco create monthly snack boxes to let you experience Japan from the comfort of your own home with seasonal and limited edition snacks and drinks. We’ve teamed up with them to show you what’s inside so here’s a look at the current boxes, themed around retro Tokyo and summer in Hokkaido, which are both available now. Look out for a special discount at the end too!

TokyoTreat – Tokyo Throwback

Get a taste of retro Tokyo and relaxing Kissaten cafes with TokyoTreat’s fun and exclusive Japanese snack subscription box. It’s filled with limited-edition KitKats, specialty-flavoured Japanese chips, seasonal treats, and occasional sodas that are only available in Japan for a limited time. This month there are 13 different sweet and savoury items, including a full size bag of KitKats, DIY Napolitan spaghetti and melon soda drink, plus a colour booklet. 4 items aren’t suitable for vegetarians.

Marceline’s Favourites

  • Napolitan Spaghetti – this is basically instant yakisoba with a tomato powder that all comes together quickly in a frying pan with your choice of toppings. It’s not going to win any awards in Italy but it was a tasty filling lunch and fun to try something different.
  • Chocolate Donut – while a little bit drier than a freshly baked donut, this is so chocolatey that it was gone before I thought to make a cup of coffee to go with it.
  • Pizza Pretzel Sticks – another snack that disappeared in minutes. Similar to Pocky or Pretz, they’re crunchy sticks with a nice tomato-forward savoury flavour.
  • Pudding Taiyaki – I wouldn’t have guessed the flavour but the bubbly chocolate does have a richer, creamier taste and the fish design is always so cute.
  • Banana KitKats – I can’t say that I love artificial banana flavour but these taste exactly like those foam bananas and really took me back. One to share with friends and watch their faces.

Sakuraco – Summer in Hokkaido

This month you can experience Hokkaido’s culinary landscape, which is filled with fruits, dairy and seafood. Each monthly Sakuraco box contains 20 traditional, authentic, and artisan Japanese snacks from local snack makers across Japan, including Japanese teas, a special Japanese tableware item and a full colour booklet. For this month’s box, there’s Hokkaido Azuki tea and beautiful ceramic kobachi bowl. 3 items aren’t suitable for vegetarians (all crackers).

Emma’s Favourites

  • Yubari Melon Daifuku – I love daifuku and having the fruit infused into the white bean paste was wonderful. I wish there were more in the box!
  • Hokkaido Azuki Tea – This reminded me of eating Zenzai (red bean soup) in the dead of winter in Kanazawa and it really took me back. The flavour of beans is subtle but delicious, making the tea a little sweet too.
  • Taiho Crackers – These are so crunchy and to contrast, they’re coated in a sticky sweet soy sauce glaze that is just divine. They are very addictive!
  • Yubari Melon Jelly – funnily enough I’m not the biggest melon fan, but the jelly is so fresh and fruity that I couldn’t help but enjoy it.
  • Wasabi Pumpkin Seeds – the perfect snack for with a drink. I love the initial heat from the wasabi and the crunch of the seed and coating.
