KiraKira Doodles Kawaii Coloring Book Review

As you know, I love kawaii ghosts so I’m a big fan of KiraKira Doodles‘ happy ghost friend Spooky McCute. I ordered his latest enamel pin (more on that below) and Kira kindly included a copy of her latest kawaii coloring book to try out. (Even though I’m British, I’m using Kira’s US spelling of ‘color’ throughout, much as it pains me!)

This new book is subtitled ‘Foodies & Cuties’ and is packed full of of Kira’s trademark doodle characters to color in.

There’s definitely lots of food themes with ice cream, fruit, vegetables, donuts and more. Each page usually features a few versions of the same characters so you can have fun creating different flavours, or challenge yourself to use only a few colors.

There’s plenty animals too, including dogs, cats and bears, plus magical designs featuring unicorns, mermaids, crystals and rainbows. Spooky McCute makes quite a few appearances too!

 

There’s a useful page at the front for testing your pens so you can see how they look on the paper before you ruin a coloring page. Kira is well known for using Copic markers (UK / USA) so I tried my tiny collection, plus my larger rainbow of Pentel sign pens (UK / USA)  – fun fact: these were the first felt tip pens ever invented!

You can see the Copics bleed through a lot but the paper is thick enough to cope. You could probably get away with using paint too, and colored pencils would be perfect for blending colors.

My ink colors were a bit limited so I tried out the fruity page. The Copics definitely have a more even coverage of ink (compare the two green apples) and the brush side feels lovely on the smooth paper. If you can afford some, they’re worth it. My pens are all bright primary colors so I might have to invest in some pastels before I do any more coloring.

Overall, this is a super cute coloring book that any kawaii fan will love. It’s not the cheapest book you’ll find at $18 (£14) but with 21 pages to color, and lots of fun details, it will keep you occupied for quite a while. I’d love to see a digital version too, so I can color on my iPad.
