Belle: The Art of Junko Mizuno

Posted on October 23, 2014 by

Junko Mizuno is a Japanese artist whose work is a mixture of cute and disturbing. She has a new exhibition in London called Belle and I went to check it out.

Atomica Junko Mizuno

The exhibition at Atomica Gallery in Covent Garden was small (only around 20 pieces) but well attended and I enjoyed all the artworks on display.

Her cartoon style uses lots of bright colours and glitter and features fun little details, such as the adorable skeletal gingerbread men in ‘Pancakes’.

My favourite piece was ‘Kappa Baby’ because it is cute and glittery and painted onto Japanese paper (washi). Such a great idea!

I also particularly liked ‘Euphoria: Cats’ with its trio of playful felines, ‘Swans Tokyo 2013’ and ‘Jugoku Dayu (Hell Courtesan)’.

This is the first time Junko’s art has been displayed in London and I would definitely recommend this exhibition to anyone who likes a touch of the macabre with their kawaii!

‘Belle: The Art of Junko Mizuno’ is on at the Atomica Gallery until the 28th of October.

I love Junko Mizuno’s work. I have to find where to buy some of her stuff. It’s so unique.
