Whether you enjoy being near the ocean or just reading about it, I think we can all agree it hosts some pretty cute animals! Sea creatures are among my all-time favorite craft themes for summer, so I thought I’d share some of the newest ones I’ve discovered.
Canon’s Creative Park has several free printable options that feature cute sea creatures, but my favorite is this clownfish paper aquarium. The Tiny Craft World channel even has a tutorial if you need help assembling it!
Speaking of Tiny Craft World, they also have an adorable chubby octopus plushie DIY for anyone looking for a fun sewing project—you can find the free pattern on their blog.
For an alternative to the ‘common’ octopus, the Mohu blog has a free dumbo octopus amigurumi pattern that I’m absolutely crazy over! The same blog also conveniently has some information on amigurumi basics that are linked in the same post if you need them.
There are many different origami tutorials I came across, but my favorite is the origami mermaid from Da-chan! A fun idea is to make several and attach them to a bit of string or twine and make a summer garland.
The Lia Griffith blog also has a great post on how to sew felt sea turtles using a free printable template. It also includes a bit of simple embroidery to make them fancy looking, but it would make good practice for beginners new to sewing or embroidery.
Another fun (and free!) amigurumi project is Celia the Crab amigurumi crochet pattern from Yarn Society. The starfish bow really makes this project extra cute!
If San-X’s Jinbei-san is one your favorite kawaii characters—he’s definitely one of mine!—you’ll want to make this needle felt miniature whale shark DIY from the Sachiko Susa wool felt channel.
SimplePaperMade also has a fun how-to video to make a paper jellyfish that I think would be another cute design option for a summer garland or mobile.
