Whether you’re green-fingered, trying to keep your plants alive, or even have artificial ones, here’s some ideas to make your plants, garden or balcony look a little cuter. Most are easy enough for anyone to try, make use of things you’d throw away, or come as a full kit, so they’re great for a summer holiday project too.
The official Hello Kitty and Friends channel has quite a few garden-themed DIYs to choose from, all featuring Sanrio characters. The most recent is a My Sweet Piano Birdhouse using a blank wooden birdhouse from any big craft shop. Ir includes a template but you can obviously paint any design you like, or use decoupage. If you don’t have a garden, there’s also Papier-mâché Vases and Flowerpots from Recycled Bottles.

Pott’d (UK) create cute kits with air-dry clay and these Petal Pals will hold a little vase of flowers. Everything you need is included to make two furry friends, which you can customise to look like your own pet. If this looks too difficult, there’s a set of colourful Petite Planters with charms or free tutorials on their blog like how to make a pinch pot.

Hobbycraft also have a cute air-dry clay tutorial for a family of bear planters. It only needs a few supplies and includes templates to cut around. You could easily adjust the ear shape to make other animals too.

Mud and Bloom (UK) create gardening and nature activity boxes for kids that would also be great for newbie gardeners. They’re themed by month so July’s box has DIYs to make a mini wormery, seeds to plant for organic radishes and forget-me-nots, plus some easy crafts. You can also buy single projects, like the Butterfly Feeder Craft Kit.

Macrame plant hangers are a classic way to display your plants and there are thousands of free tutorials out there. If you’d like something a bit cuter, Sarah Hearts’ DIY Pom Pom Macrame Hanging Planter tutorial proves that pom poms make everything better and only needs a few supplies.

We’ve featured HELLOhappy’s hanging sloth planter before but now there are mini planter crochet patterns too. Choose from a frog or red panda, plus there’s other designs with a llama, otter and koala.

You can upcycle used cans and plastic bottles into a planter or decorate a boring plant pot in the same way. My Golden Thimble has one of the most original ideas, using old clothes to decorate a tin can planter. It requires a sewing maching but you could always glue them instead. You can also use acrylic paint – like my DIY Ricemonster Planter – decoupage, mosaic, coloured string or anything else you have leftover from previous craft projects.

Don’t forget Nova’s Totoro Fairy Garden tutorial from a few of years ago, and this super-old roundup of Kawaii DIY Planters has ideas that are so simple they don’t even need a tutorial.
