YumeTwins is a kawaii subscription box from the same family as TokyoTreat & Sakuraco and every month you get a box full of themed Japanese home goods, lifestyle accessories, plushies and more. They kindly sent over the August 2024 box which is available now and themed around Studio Ghibli! Look out for a special discount at the end too.

It’s been 3 years since we last reviewed a YumeTwins box and a few things have changed. The box is a little smaller than TokyoTreat but has a special box design to get you excited about what’s inside. It’s very easy to recognise some Ghibli movies from these illustrations! Full spoilers ahead if you haven’t received your box yet.

The box is colourful inside too and the first thing you’ll spot is a little magazine with more original illustrations. It includes details on all the items in the box with suggestions of how to use them, plus you can win some more Ghibli prizes in the photo contest.

There are also some fun articles about Studio Ghibli, the Ghibli Park and the inspiration behind four of their most popular movies. Even die hard Ghibli fans will likely learn something new and you’ll be wanting to rewatch a few movies too.

Unlike some kawaii boxes, YumeTwins values quality over quantity with a small selection of useful items, rather than cheap trinkets. All the items are officially licensed goods from Japan too with the original packaging. You’ll get a random design for some items from a mix of popular movies and characters available. Let’s have a closer look!
Kiki’s Delivery Service Cup Set

I was very excited about this as it’s both cute and useful, which is something I really value in a subscription box. Kiki’s Delivery Service is a top 5 Ghibli movie for me and the illustrations are a lovely reminder of some of the best scenes and characters. It’s also a clever design as there’s 4 cups that stack up and fit inside the jug.

The jug holds around 1 litre and the lid twists open so you can keep it closed when bugs are around. It’s all very light and portable so it’s ideal for a picnics and beach trips but also for sitting out in the garden. I don’t have a garden but the jug fits nicely in my fridge door so I’m sure it will get a lot of use at home this summer.
Totoro Lunch Box

This cute little Totoro bento box is also ideal for picnics or just for work or school. There’s 3 possible Totoro designs but honestly they are all equally cute. I really like the green base of mine and I’m a big fan of the mini Totoros and soot sprites.

I would call this a snack box more than a lunch box as you won’t fit a bento style meal inside. Instead I would fill it with fruit, veggies, nuts or sweet treats for a mid-afternoon snack or side dish. The base is also microwaveable so you could add something to warm up during the winter.
Ghibli Badge

This blind bag has 14 possible designs inside and I think I got the best one. My Neighbour Totoro was the very first Ghibli film I saw, though not in 1988! It saw it quite randomly at the cinema and instantly became a fan so this is a nice reminder. It’s a good quality metal badge with a safety pin style fastening and went straight on my pin board.
Howl’s Moving Castle Postcard

I recently re-watched Howl’s Moving Castle as it’s one movie I never get tired of. There’s 2 possible postcard designs in the box and mine has Howl & Sophie with the Japanese for “…you’re good at it” from the scene when they walk across the sky. It’s a standard postcard size with plenty of room for a message on the back but I think I’ll be keeping this for myself.
Spirited Away Clear File

The last item is a file folder, a Japanese stationery staple. There’s 6 possible designs with scenes from a few different movies and I was happy to get another favourite, Spirited Away. I admit I never used to see the point of file folders but over the years I have come to find them very useful for recipes, travel or making it easier to keep important documents together. This is a simple one pocket design but will surely get some use.
Final Thoughts
Overall, this is a nice mix of useful and decorative items that any Studio Ghibli fan would enjoy and I’m sure I’ll use everything. Getting fully licensed Japanese products is important to me and I’d much rather have a few high quality items than a larger number of cheaper items that don’t last or just take up space. If you’re a kawaii fan, YumeTwins is a great way to add to your collection with high quality items from popular Japanese characters and brands. Even if you can’t afford a monthly subscription, it’s definitely worth checking the latest themes (we do monthly roundups!) to get a one off box with your favourite characters. Recent boxes have included Rilakkuma, Pokemon, Sanrio, Kirby and Magical Anime.
