Buy & DIY Cute Characters

Studio Ghibli Buys & DIYs

Posted on April 23, 2024 by

I’m getting very excited to visit the Ghibli Park and I’ve just managed to secure tickets to the Ghibli Museum in Tokyo, so I’m in a very happy Ghibli mood at the moment! In honour, let’s see what Ghibli themed items we can find to buy and DIY…

Totoro cookie recipes

These Totoro cookies from I Am A Food Blog are the cutest and I love that his little belly is a different flavour to the rest of him. I’m a huge fan of black sesame so I need to get myself a cookie cutter so I can make these at home.

The Ghibli stores in Japan are called Donguri Kyowakoku (Acorn Republic) and they’re dotted around the country selling a huge variety of Ghibli merch that gets updated all the time. One of the cutest new releases has to be this Kiki pouch that looks like her cake in the film. (Unfortunately this is now sold out in the online store (JP – requires forwarding service) but still available at resellers like Meccha Japan (JP). I also love the little plush coin purses and pouches on offer too, like this Totoro complete with soot sprite friend…

Studio Ghibli embroidery patterns

Jiji is one of the best things about Kiki’s Delivery Service and I just love this floral embroidery pattern of him from Shop Jamie Photo. It’s a downloadable PDF and it comes with step by step illustrations and text instructions, plus a thread guide for easy colour matching.

Maison Ghibli (EU) is the home of official Ghibli merchandise in Europe and a lot of the things on their website due to arrive soon are things that are currently in the Donguri Kyowakoku stores over in Japan. These green tea mugs with characters and items from some of the films dotted over them are so fun. A friend of mine has the Spirited Away one, but this Totoro option is very cute. In their homeware section, I also really want the Calcifer pancake pan. There’s even a matching spatula to go with it too!

Studio Ghibli cupcakes recipes

Who else adores the soot sprites that pop up in Spirited Away and My Neighbour Totoro? Let’s make some for ourselves, but in the form of cupcakes! Chelsweets actually adds little coloured star sprinkles to represent the kompeito sweets they love, but if you have some you could add those instead. I think these would be fantastic to try in mini cupcake form too.

Studio Ghibli Howl's Moving Castle cardigan

Howl’s Moving Castle has to be my favourite Ghibli film and this cardigan emulating Howl’s cloak from Steady Hands (US) is just perfect. Shipping to the UK can get pricey but I’ve managed to get one of their items second hand on Vinted, so it’s worth keeping an eye out.

Ghibli Museum paper craft kits

The Ghibli Museum in Mitaka (JP – requires forwarding service) currently have these exclusive stunning Miniatuart paper kits available that allow you to build miniature parts of the museum itself, including the robot from Castle in the Sky, the Totoro ticket booth and the cat bus.

Plaza Japan (JP) also has some of these paper kits available showcasing scenes from different Ghibli films, including Spirited Away, and even some of the less commonly included, like When Marnie Was There.

Which is your favourite Ghibli film?
