If you’re planning a trip to Japan this year, Amy from Cakes with Faces is here to help with lots of tips and advice.

Visiting Japan in 2025

I’ve been travelling to Japan since 2010. As many times as I go, I always want to go back. The list of places to visit in Japan is never-ending. I’m the author of a Japan guide book, and I love sharing my travels and tips for trip planning on YouTube. I always try and make my videos as helpful as possible – because I remember how many questions I had when I first went to Japan! It can be intimidating (as well as exciting!) when you don’t know what to expect.

Here’s a selection of videos to help you plan your trip. If you have any questions, I always try and reply to comments, even on old videos, so feel free to ask if you’re stuck on anything!

Visiting Japan in 2025

First, here’s a summary of what’s new, what’s changed and new attractions opening in 2025.

Planning a Trip

My Japlanning playlist has a series of videos with practical tips to help you plan your trip (sorry not sorry for the cheesy name!), from booking your flights and hotels, to how to get around on the trains, and what the food’s like.

In this video, I talk through my itinerary from a 2 week trip to Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka (plus a bonus stay in Kinosaki Onsen, an absolutely gorgeous hot springs town). It covers the hits, misses and what I’d do differently next time:

Once you’re there, Japan’s less expensive than you’d think! Here’s everything I spent for 2 weeks, including transport, food and admission fees, to give you an idea of how much money you’ll need:

Must-Visits for First Timers

Nothing makes you feel more like you’re in Tokyo than seeing the view of skyscrapers stretching as far as you can see in every direction! Shibuya Sky is the newest observation deck in Tokyo, with an amazingly clear view. Be sure to visit the free observation deck at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building too, so you can enjoy both the day and night-time view!

Both TeamLab Borderless and TeamLab Planets in Tokyo are amazing, immersive experiences, with mesmerising projections, music and lights. This year, a huge expansion’s opening at TeamLab Planets, so that’s the one I’d most recommend visiting – plus it has unique rooms where you walk through water, with projections on the surface. This video’s from before the expansion (I’ll be visiting again this year to check out the new rooms!).

Something different for your second/third/fourth trip to Japan!

There are so many interesting places in Kyushu! The Unzen Hells are on the side of a volcano, with steam vents and bubbling ponds. It’s all completely natural, just like an onsen hot springs bath, but much too hot to bathe in!

If you’re going to Kyoto, the Hozugawa River Cruise in Arashiyama is a boat ride through beautiful scenery that’s both relaxing and exciting, with short white water sections.

Cute and Kawaii

Because this is Super Cute Kawaii, I had to include something cute! And the home of kawaii is, of course, Harajuku. These days there’s more cute character merch than ever, and LOTS of gachapon!

Souvenir stamps are a fun (and free!) souvenir of your trip – perfect for travel journals. Here’s how to find them and where to get kawaii stamp books.

More help planning your trip

There are lots more tips, as well as planning checklists and places to go, in my 300 page Japan travel guide book. It’s suitable both for trips to Tokyo and travelling around Japan. My new Japan Trip Planning Deck has cards for attractions in Tokyo to help you work out your itinerary. Plan together with your friends/family, and it’s pocket-sized to take with you in Japan. It also includes Japanese food and Tokyo day trips. Both ship worldwide from the UK.

Thanks Amy! Have a browse through our Visiting Japan category too for more tips and guides for a kawaii trip including the Ghibli Park & Museum, character cafes, theme parks and shopping.
