Our Super Cute Creators interview series lets you find out more about some of our favourite kawaii artists, designers and makers. Today we’re chatting to Kylie of Bright Bat Design.
I have been a fan of Bright Bat Design for a while now. I have collected much of the stuff from their shop and liked all the social media posts as soon as they are posted. So, I am super excited to bring you this interview with the gal behind the company!
Introduce Yourself!
My name is Kylie and I am the owner and illustrator behind Bright Bat Design. In my spare time I enjoy video games, books and spending time with my family, friends and cats.
Where do you live and what’s it’s like there?
I live in Iowa, in the US. Specifically I’m from an area called the Quad Cities. We love living here because we have country roads and large parks but we also have downtown areas and a thriving community for creatives.
What was your first experience with kawaii culture and why does kawaii inspire your work?
My first experience with kawaii culture was my love for all things cute as a child. I always loved the adorable style of the characters from Sanrio, Care Bears, Rainbow Brite, Pokemon and other Saturday morning favorites! Kawaii has inspired me and my artwork because of the simple way the style can brighten a moment in your life and make you smile. Its like a little sprinkle of adorable positivity in your day!
What cute products or characters can you never resist buying for yourself?
I can never resist enamel pins and stickers, they’re just too fun to collect! Currently I’ve been really into collecting fan merchandise of Bulbasaur (my favorite Pokemon) and anything Studio Ghibli.
What was the first product you made/designed for sale and how does it compare to what you sell now?
The first products I ever produced were stickers. They have always been a favorite for me to design and for our customers to collect. Since we started in 2016, our stickers have become much higher quality but still remain to be a crowd favorite.
What are you working on at the moment?
We are currently working on 3 new collection releases for late summer: Kawaiild West, Wanderlust and Vacation Monsters. Each will include pins, keychains and stickers. Since we’re nearing the spooky season, we’re also starting to prepare for our busiest and favorite month of the year, October!
What’s the most exciting thing that’s happened since you started your business?
The most exciting thing that has happened is our growth! It blows my mind every single day that we have such a large audience and group of followers/customers who love my artwork. I am so thankful and happy to know that my art can make so many people smile. It’s a dream come true to work on my passion full time.
What’s your dream ambition for your business?
My dream for my business is to continue to expand on the products and designs we offer. I’m never out of ideas for our next big project and love being creative in new ways.
Who are your favourite kawaii designers and makers?
It’s so hard to pick favourites but I’ve been really enjoying the work of @blushsprout, @IamLunaSol, @birduyen, @mooonsugars, @sugarbone and @catmintstudios.
Where can we find you on the internet?
You can find me on Instagram or you can shop online at www.brightbatdesign.com or Etsy.
