Back to school season always brings back memories of stationery shopping for new pencil cases and the cutest of items to fill it with. So, I’ve picked a selection of cute, fun and useful products to add to your backpack this term.

If you rely on a laptop, then you know how much you need to protect them while travelling backwards and forwards to school. Baggu (US) has a selection of padded cases with the boldest of prints – plus Sanrio & Miffy collabs – like these fruity ones, which you can also find at Urban Outfitters (UK).

I love these Sun Star Palettone stickers that just make your notes or agenda pages a little bit more interesting. They look like a paint palette and come in a number of colour combinations from pastels to brights. They’re slightly translucent, so they can be used as a highlighting mark for things like page numbers or dates. You can find them at resellers worldwide including Tokyo Pen Shop (US).

If you’re looking for actual highlighters to cover a larger area or lines of text, then this set of little carrot highlighters from Legami (EU) is adorable. You get 6 different colours in a pack so you can categorise your highlighting in multiple different ways, plus they’re pastel rather than neon and quick drying for ease of use.

While not everyone will need or be looking for a glass pen, there are some that might be using these in art class, calligraphy club, or even just for personal journaling. I think the bamboo design for this is beautiful AND it comes with a little glass panda pen rest and two bottles of ink. Get it from LOFT (JP – requires forwarding service).

If you want to keep your paper notes together, but a normal paper clip won’t do the job, then these larger cat clips at Oliver Bonas (UK) could be just the ticket and make your study days a little brighter.

Animal themed stationery can make your pencil case more fun, but what if your pencil case WAS an animal? Punilabo makes a range of standing pencil cases that are hugely popular and very practical too. They’re widely available including at Dreaming of Japan (UK) and JetPens (US).

So, this next choice was inspired by the Pompompurin pudding I had in Japan earlier this year, which was very jiggly and looked like his bum. These Punitto animal butt erasers at Tofu Cute (UK) look just like that and while they don’t come with a dog option, you can get a bunny, panda, hamster or bear instead.

Rulers are useful to have at the best of times, but this Midori clip ruler at Cult Pens (UK) takes it to the next level. Whilst doing the normal job of allowing you to measure and draw straight lines, it also has a clip to hold your pages down, and a selection of stencils for adding to schedules and notes.

Speaking of clips to hold your pages down, this big Ukanmuri clip is perfect for keeping your pages open when reading. They come in lots of plain and translucent colours, and even a completely transparent one too. There are also special designs available with Pokemon, Chiikawa and Mofusand – the Shark Cat version completely drew me in! Art from the Heart (UK) and JetPens (US) both have a big selection.
