The weather has been glorious lately and it feels like spring is fully here, with summer not too far off. These craft patterns, kits and tutorials all feature beautiful butterflies and moths to remind you to get outdoors while you can. Some would also make lovely gifts for Mother’s Day.

How beautiful are these Carnival Moth Ornaments by NellyMakes? You get digital patterns for both the Midnight and Cherry Blossom designs, and you’ll certainly level up your embroidery skills by the time you finish. There’s also a butterfly-themed stick & stitch embroidery pack (UK) if you prefer something simpler.

Sweet Annet (EU) has a clever wooden cross stitch kit that slots together for a standing or hanging ornament. There are 2 butterfly designs to choose from, with poppies or apple blossom.

I also really like this simple Butterfly Mandala cross stitch pattern from Historical Sampler. The symmetrical design is very pleasing and the colours are lovely. It’s also available as a full kit (UK).

Mini Mi has some of the most delightful insects I’ve ever seen and you can make all different kinds of moths with their felt sewing patterns. This Rosy Maple Moth looks perfect for spring and all patterns include step-by-step instructions, templates, videos and supplies guide.

Craft Club (AU) has butterfly kits for all different types of needlecrafts. My favourites are the latch hook rugs in 2 different colours, but there’s also a needlepoint pouch and embroidery hoop. You can even get them all together in a bargain butterfly bundle!

I can’t leave out lalylala who has the cutest crochet patterns for all kinds of bugs, that include multiple patterns for the whole life cycle. There’s a few different butterflies and moths and Brimstone Butterfly has the perfect spring colours. The patterns – and kits (EU) – are suitable for ‘daring beginners’ and available in 7 languages.
On to some free crafts and tatsukuri origami has the perfect origami butterfly tutorial with optional antennae. It’s super simple but very cute and looks great in both plain and patterned paper.

Red Ted Art have loads of free butterfly crafts aimed at kids but that just means they’re easy enough for anyone to have a go, and don’t need any special tools or materials. These butterfly bookmark corners are so effective and can be decorated however you like, so you could recreate a real butterfly or just use your favourite colours.
These pretty satin ribbon butterflies by Creative Witch Workshop are inspired by the Japanese craft of kanzashi but using ribbon instead of the traditional folded cloth. They’d make lovely hair accessories, or you could string a few together into a garland.
