We’ve extended our collaboration with TokyoTreat and Sakuraco so we’ll be showing you what’s inside every month and our snack highlights. This month’s TokyoTreat Snacktastic Halloween box was so fun that I had to go into more detail as it’s really not one to miss. I’ve also included my highlights from the Sakuraco box and there’s a discount for both at the end if you want one for yourself.
TokyoTreat is a fun and exclusive Japanese snack box featuring unique and exclusive flavors straight from Japan and October’s Snacktastic Halloween box lets you experience Japan’s spooky season with limited edition, seasonal and surprising snacks. This is the current box which can still be ordered until October 15th so only read on if you’re okay with seeing everything inside.
I loved the special Halloween design on the box and it was full of spooky snacks too. There are 14 different sweet and savoury items, including a full size bag of KitKats, drink and instant ramen noodles, plus a colour booklet. 4 items aren’t suitable for vegetarians but mainly small ones like the marshmallow and gummies. There was also a random surprise item this month and mine was a large bag of chili pepper karinto (fried dough sticks).
Most of my Japan trips were in the Autumn so I always get excited seeing Japanese Halloween snacks and there were so many with spooky cute packaging. I felt like I’d been out trick-or-treating! As always, the full colour booklet has all the info on flavours, ingredients and allergies so you know what you’re eating, plus some fun articles about how Halloween is celebrated in Japan.
There’s a full bag of 10 individually wrapped mini KitKats every month so you can share with friends, or keep them for little treats. This month’s flavour is Apple Pie. I’m not sure I’d have guessed that without the wrapper but you can definitely taste the warmth of spices along with a little sweetness. If you’re a pumpkin spice fan, this could be a new favourite for you.
Often there’s a canned drink but this month it’s a Fruit Juice Potion you make yourself from a powder. There’s 5 colourful flavours that might be in your box and I have no idea what blue is but it looks very cool. The taste was quite artificial so you might be better diluting it more or using lemonade. (my cute – glow in the dark! – cup is from the 2021 Pusheen Box and I’m glad to finally have a good use for it)
I was surprised to find a large Caramel Danish and even more so when I cut it open and saw how soft and fluffy it was with layers of caramel. After taking the photos, I warmed it up in the oven for a few minutes and the smell was incredible. It made the outside a little crispy so it was something like a buttery croissant crossed with a cinnamon bun. I really wished I had more and will be looking out for it.
There were lots more fun snacks too. The Choco Pie & Angel Pie in the top left are quite similar but one has a marshmallow filling and the other is cream. They were both really good with a cup of tea. The Spooky Spicy Crackers promised a numbing level of spice – I didn’t initially think they were that spicy but it really builds up after you’ve eaten a few. I’m not a huge spice fan but I really liked these. Bottom right are Pizza Puffs and Harvest Karinto (made with vegetables), both nice to snack on. And there was a whole box of Pai no Mi with a Japanese Pudding flavour. These were very flaky with a creamy custard filling.
I always enjoy trying the instant noodles and this month’s flavour is Curry Ramen. There’s English instructions on the back and it’s as simple as boiling the noodles and adding the flavour package, plus any additional toppings you like. The noodles are a non-fried flat wavy type and I really liked the texture, while the broth was full of flavour without being too spicy or salty. The package also suggests using the leftover broth to make a kind of risotto by microwaving it with rice so I gave that a go too! It wasn’t very photogenic but tasted pretty good so worth trying if you hate wasting food.
The rest of the snacks included gummies that turn your tongue blue, mini Hi-Chews, puffed rice stick and custard-filled marshmallow. Overall I think this box is a perfect introduction to TokyoTreat as you get a lot of interesting snacks and flavours that are fun and Halloween-themed while still being tasty. The bag of KitKats, ramen and full size snacks make it good value if you’re not able to shop for Japanese snacks locally. It would be great for a Halloween party or to share with friends and family. Look out for our spooky video on Instagram later too – we had a lot of fun making it!
