Since popping out to our favorite bakery is out of the question for some of us right now, I pulled together a list of fun, easy and cost-effective ways to decorate cupcakes or cakes from the comfort of your own home with cake toppers. Maybe cake decorating is not your thing but you want to make an effort to jazz up your tasty treats – I got you! Grab a box of toothpicks, search for stuff around the house and get to craftin’.
Recently I made some washi tape flags for a cake topper using Victoria Chan’s easy to follow tutorial. Since you probably have racks of washi tape around your house (I can’t be the only one) you are sure to find the right pattern for your party!
Put your printer to work and print out some cute designs from Etsy sellers like MelGraphicCreations’s kitty cats.
Or succulent cuties by CherryToppers.
Dig through your yarn stash for any bits of yarn you have been saving that have been too small for projects. These tiny scraps can be turned into pompoms with this tutorial from Arts&Crafts. Attach a pompom to a toothpick and you are good to go!
Tiny toys (like vinyl figurines) can be the perfect accent to a cupcake. If they have been sitting around, give them a soapy bath before plunking them down into some frosting. After you’re done, give them another gentle bath to remove any sugary sweetness left behind – unless ants are your thing!
Add an extra yum factor. Edible decorations like fresh fruit slices, colorful cereal puffs, shaved dark chocolate ribbons and cute candy shapes all make easy decoration options that can be eaten and not tossed out.
Kendy (AKA MissMuffcake) lives in California with her boyfriend Matt and two kitties (Mady & Mortis). In her spare time she likes eating/creating vegan food, petting kittens, collecting cute toys, wandering cemeteries, making zines and doing yoga.
