Neko Box Zakka Kit Review

Posted on October 16, 2017 by

You might remember my review of the monthly subscription box from Neko Box back in February and The Zakka Kit is their new subscription box just for Japanese stationery fans. Each mystery box has 6-8 quality items from well-known brands and could include stickers, washi tape, postcards, stamps, craft supplies and more. That makes it perfect for journalling, scrapbooking or just hoarding in your collection.

Since there’s only stationery inside, the Zakka Kit box is a lot smaller and affordable than the big Neko Box. There’s still some nice touches like the colourful sticker. The box got a bit of a bashing during its journey to the UK but everything inside arrived in perfect condition. Let’s see what I got.

Cat Sticky Memos

I’m a big fan of sticky memos and the Japanese ones are definitely the cutest. This set has lots of different cats and a mix of colours and patterns. While they’re perfect for studying, I love using them for trip planning as you can bookmark exactly which bit of the page you want to remember and write notes on them too. With this set you’ll have cute cats peeking out of your book.

Bunny & Goldfish Stickers

Yay, stickers! These are quite small sticker sheets but still manage to pack in a few different designs. I especially like the bunny sheet – because bunnies – but also because they’re transparent so will look great on coloured backgrounds.

mt Washi Tape

I have quite a collection of washi tape but I’m always happy to add more as it’s so useful. This is official mt brand tape so you know it’s good quality. The design is a traditional flower pattern – not the most exciting option, but I actually love it when people gift me plainer styles since most of my collection is too cute to use!

Traveller’s Notebook Sticker Labels

Traveller’s Notebook is a popular brand for journalling as the notebooks come with a refillable cover and are great to use on the go. These stickers have a travel theme with stamps and passport style labels that would be nice for decorating a travel journal.

Sticker Envelope

This little envelope was filled with a selection of textured paper sticker flakes featuring traditional Japanese items – lucky cat, fan, daruma and temari. I love all the details.

Kitagawa Utamaro Postcard

And finally, a postcard. This one features artwork from Kitagawa Utamaro, a Japanese artist who made woodblock prints and paintings.

The Zakka Kit might not appeal if you only love kawaii stationery but if you love all things Japan then it’s a great mix of cute and traditional designs. For me, it definitely brings back memories of browsing in stationery and art supply shops on my Japan trips. If you’re looking to kickstart a Japan travel or trip planning journal, it’s a nice little starter pack and it would also make a great gift.

The Zakka Kit costs $19.99 for a monthly subscription or $23.99 for a one-off box. You can sign up now for November’s box, which will have an Autumn theme. And while we’re here, November’s Neko Box will have a Cats theme!

Updated 2022: This shop is now closed – use the SCK Guide to Subscription Boxes to find something similar.
