Naoshi Sunae Sand Art Kit Review

When I reviewed Naoshi’s Ice Cream Work book recently, I remembered I had one of her kits stashed away so I thought it was about time I tried it out. Naoshi specialises in Sunae, which is sand art!

The kit comes with everything you need to make one piece – a sunae board, coloured sand, toothpick, ribbon, folded paper and directions. This egg is for complete beginners but the instructions are quite basic (though very cute!). If you’re new to Sunae, I would recommend watching a video of Naoshi at work first to get the general idea.

You start from dark to light so I removed the outlines first. You just peel off the paper leaving a sticky surface behind, then sprinkle on the sand and tip it off. It definitely helps to use the folded paper to catch the sand so it’s easy to funnel the leftovers back into the bag.

I did the same with the yellow and white and I was done! It was very quick to do but has a really fun finish because of the textured sand.

Depending on the design, you can use it as a notecard, turn it into a bookmark or gift tag with the ribbon, or just display it. The board is quite thick card so it will stand up quite well.
